READING RESPONSE:

How do the authors articulate their ideas about installation art in relationship to Ideas, Arrangements, Effects? How might the synthesis of these approaches influence audience engagement?

The idea of installation art is highly interpretational and it is “shift from object knowledge to subject experience”. With its experiential and abstract qualities, the original intention of the artist can be transformed into another. Specific intentions are shown lying in the clues of materials and arrangements.

Installation art is closely related to the arrangement of objects in space. It is a transformation of (mainly) interior space. And it was originally intended to subvert the commodification of artworks, so most installations are temporary and ephemeral. With just rearrangements of objects, the space can be perceived as another.

The effects of installation art differs with other mediums of art mainly due to its immersive and sensational qualities. Rather than an art object to view, installation art is more of an experience for the audiences. More than that, some installation have “performativity” qualities, which adds a bit of improvisation to the artwork. When audiences enter, they might have slightly different point of view or takeaways.

One memorable point I read in “Installation Art” was about the comparison between installation and theater, where the author describes both as “immersed in the sensory/narrative experience that surrounds him and maintain a degree of self-identity as a viewer”.

The synthesis of these approaches can vastly change the whole installation. The shift in ideas, can decide the whole atmosphere of the artwork. A personal example from an installation project last semester was the decision of making it scary or cute, by changing the rhythm of movements. When it moves abruptly, the chain installation looks frightening. When it moves slowly, it seems more calm. Changing the arrangement also made the installation different, especially the visual effects of crowded vs sparse. Not only the installation itself can make a difference, but also its interactivity. The effect on audience is large when the installation interact or does not interact with the audience.
